About Season Stats
The Path of Legends (PoL) leaderboard is a great place to consistently find the best players and to see how they adapt to the meta. The first Monday of every month, the season ends and a new one begins. While players are competing to reach the top, we are tracking their results and deck choices.
With this blog, we present a summary and a few insights of all the data that we collected during the last days of the season, with a focus on the decks that players used to obtain their final rank.
Stats Format Basics
These stats are based on the decks and card collections of the best players, the ones who finished among the top 1,000 players in Path of Legends.
Over this blog, we'll look at card stats with tables that use the following format:
- Usage refers to the share of players who used the card in their main deck. This stat is paired with a change %, which is the difference when compared to last season's usage.
- Average Rank is the mean of all the placements from players who used this card. The center point is 500, so if the value is below 500, it means the card is quite good.
- Have It Maxed refers to the share of players who have that card at Level 15, which is the ideal level to compete in PoL. The companion bar chart also shows the amount of players who have this card at Level 14 (in light blue). If the light blue range is wide, it implies that a lot of players don't consider this card worthy to spend Elite Wild Cards on it, because EWCs are a scarce resource.
- Usage/Maxed (U/M) shows the amount of players who use a card from those that have it maxed. Some cards can be harder to unlock and level up, so usage may not be a good indicator if it's being held down by other factors. It's also relevant to know that every season boosts a few cards, which allows players to use them without the need to level them up.
Win Rate VS Rank
Due to the nature of the ladder system, card win rates aren't useful to understand the strength of a card. We think a mix of the stats listed above can paint a more accurate picture of the state of each card.
The main reason for this is that system which are based in score matchmaking aims to pair players with others of similar strength. If the amount of battles played is sufficient, the score of the player stabilises, leading to a win rate of ~50%.
Better players stabilise at higher scores than worse players, but in the long term, the winrate becomes similar. This causes this metric to be fairly irrelevant when compared to rank and usage.

Deck Variety
Across the top 1K leaderboard, there are many kinds of players. Some regularly use the same deck, regardless of the meta (one-tricks), others like to create their own for each meta, and others run with the most popular decks of the leaderboard.
This chart compares deck variety with previous seasons. In the first category, you find decks that are unique in the leaderboard.
Moving to the right, each group represents a different threshold of deck popularity. In the last category, you can see the amount of players using decks with more than 20 users.

Tower Troops
Cannoneer and Royal Chef drastically increase in usage, at the cost of Tower Princess.
Tower Princess is no longer the obvious choice, as her usage drops to the lowest in many months.
Dagger Duchess loses a third of her usage, but has a decent rank average.
Previous Season Stats
Evolutions
Evolved Furnace became the clear favourite during its release month, with almost twice as much usage as the runner-up.
Evolved Zap and Goblin Giant had the biggest usage increases aside from Furnace.
Evolved Wall Breakers had very high usage considering the average rank, a clear outlier.
Snowball has its usage cut in half after the nerf, and it's average rank is no longer the best.
This season, 1 player finished in the top 1,000 with a 1-evo deck. No one used a deck without evolutions.
Top 3 evolutions:
- Wall Breakers
- Inferno Dragon
- Mega Knight
Previous Season Stats
Evolution Unlock Rate
Evolutions are arguably the most challenging progression limitation for players who don't purchase Pass Royale regularly. This means they are also a great indicator for seasonal revenue from the competitive players.
Over time, players find evolution shards through other means, so older evolutions lose that strong correlation with Pass Royale purchases. To avoid that, it's best to keep comparisons to very recent evolutions from the last 2 seasons.
Monetisation performance of recent evolutions:
- Inferno Dragon (S72): 40% on release
- Skeleton Barrel (S73): 42% on release
- Furnace (S74): 60% on release
Pass Royale buyer share among the top 10,000 players jumped upwards by almost 50%. An unprecedented increase from what was already a record high for the year. The strength and popularity of Furnace may have been a significant factor.
This season we can also see the effect of the 4 evolutions that were given away through live events: Archers, Tesla, Wizard and Electro Dragon. They all have an unlock rate very close to 100%.

Evolutions VS Normal Cards
Comparing evolutions to their normal cards is a great way to see how relevant each evolution ability actually is.
If we also look at the usage of the normal card, we can get a better sense of their place in the meta, helping us answer:
- Is the normal card strong and usable by itself?
- Is the evolution necessary and what makes it strong?
Several evolutions take this to an extreme, where the normal card is completely unused and only the Evolution has usage. For these cases, it seems fair to argue that the normal card has been weakened so that the evolution buff turns it into a balanced one.
It seems incompatible to have both the normal card and the evolution in a balanced state, at least as long as the evolution provides a relevant advantage.
What is LUR?
This chart introduces a new stat: Log-based Usage Ratio (LUR). This is a value that directly compares the usage of an Evolution with the usage of it's normal variant.
The basic way to read it is:
- A positive value means that the Evolution is more popular
- A negative value means that the Normal Card is more popular
The logarithm is simply used to translate this ratio into a simpler number that's easier to read. E.g.:
- LUR=1: Evolution is used 10x more
- LUR=2: Evolution is used 100x more
Cards that have been completely overshadowed by their evolutions:
- Goblin Giant
- Tesla
- Goblin Barrel
- Electro Dragon
- Archers
- Witch
- Hunter
And a few that very close to the complete replacement were Furnace, Valkyrie and Goblin Cage.
Most unappealing evolutions compared to their counterparts:
- Goblin Drill
- Skeletons
- Ice Spirit
Previous Season Stats
Champions
Champions are always an interesting category because they exclude each other in decks. But players don't always have a Champion in their deck, so that's why "No Champion" is listed as well.
Skeleton King loses the popularity that has been gained last season, and still has the worst average rank of all. This means it's likely to drop even more soon.
Decks without Champions became much more common this season.
Mighty Miner stands out as the best Champion; with a fairly high usage and great average rank.
Previous Season Stats
Spells
The Log is finally dethroned as the most popular spell, and Barbarian Barrel takes its place.
Several spells had very high usage increases. This is unusual, and points towards significant changes in the meta. Barbarian Barrel, Goblin Curse, Rage, Evolved Zap and Poison; they all almost doubled.
Some Spells became less popular, but small changes compared to the increases. This means that the overall amount of spells in the meta has increased.
Poison had the best average rank among all spells.
Previous Season Stats
Buildings
There were 53.2% of decks without any buildings at all, more than last season (42.5%).
Evolved Tesla and X-Bow had much better average ranks than other buildings, which are generally above 500.
Previous Season Stats
Win Conditions
Win Conditions are one of the best ways to look at archetype performance. Unlike support cards, which can fit in several archetypes, these are the core cards that define them.
Goblin Giant doubles in usage, becoming the most popular win condition. The average rank isn't good, so it seems it became too popular for its strength.
Evolved Mortar and Skeleton Barrel, both featured in the most popular deck of last season, had sharp declines in usage.
Top 3 Win Conditions:
- Evolved Wall Breakers
- Miner
- Giant

Checks and Balances
The start of the season introduced balance changes, what was their outcome?
The biggest round of balance changes certainly changed the meta a lot. Several of the buffed cards had very significant usage increases; maybe too much if we look at Minions. Most of the nerfs were also successful.
Other results were more unusual. The Cannoneer nerf-rework ended up with a lot more usage, and cards with slight nerfs such as Evolved Goblin Giant became the core of meta decks.
State before balance changes
Recent Balances
The balances for next season were already announced, so we can take a look at their current stats. As usual, the nerfed cards are the ones with highest usage.

Top 20 Countries
This leaderboard sorts countries based on the amount of players in the Top 1,000.
The amount of players for each country is displayed in the "Count" column; to the right, you can see a ±value, which is the change compared to last season.
Signature Cards are cards which were disproportionately used in the region when compared to the global average. The 5 displayed cards are sorted, meaning that the first card is the Top 1 signature card. Usually signature cards hint towards a specific archetype that is unusually popular in the country.
